FAQs

Who is behind this project?

Cuilcagh Boardwalk is built on private farmland, owned by the Sheridan family. It is a conservation project at its core, built to protect one of Northern Ireland’s largest blanket bogs from the impacts of overtourism and heavy footfall. We wanted to introduce our new online car park booking system, limiting the numbers visiting the boardwalk at any one time. By doing so, we can more easily control the flow of visitors to the site and continue to offer a COVID-safe, hassle-free experience.

How much does it cost to book a car park space?

Car park spaces are £6 per car and should be pre-booked online. If you are paying in Euro, this will be converted to the rate at which your bank charges on the day you book.

How long does the walk take?

The Cuilcagh Boardwalk is approximately 11km and takes on average 2-3 hours to walk. From the car park to the start of the boardwalk, the trail is 4.5km with the boardwalk including the final ascent via a steep section of wooden steps being 1.5km in length. Customers pre-booking their car park space are entitled to a 3 hour car parking slot to allow for walking the trail and reaching the viewing platform at the top of the boardwalk.

Why are you charging money to park here?

Over the coming months, we plan to make significant improvements to our car park and introduce new toilet facilities. We also need to employ a team of people to keep our car park safe and to welcome visitors in and out of the car park. Our ongoing work requires significant annual investment to sustainably improve and maintain the site.

What are the opening hours of the boardwalk car park?

We open every day from 7am – 7pm. The last space available to book will be 4pm daily as it takes between 2-3 hours to complete the walk. Gates will be closed at 7pm each night.

Are there any other car parking locations nearby?

Yes. Killykeegan Nature Reserve car park is located a further 0.7 miles/1 km past the entrance for the Cuilcagh Boardwalk Trail and is open during daylight hours. There are toilet facilities and picnic areas provided here.

If I pre-book online, what does that entitle me to?

Pre-booking online entitles each person to a car park space in our premium car park, which is the closest car park to the beginning of the boardwalk. Your car parking space will be allocated to you on arrival and this will result in a more positive, seamless experience for you.

I have been charged twice for my booking/I have booked two spaces by accident?

From time to time, some customers will double click on the Pay Now button by mistake and will therefore be charged twice. We also know that some of you will accidentally book two car parking spaces. If you request a refund (see next question for guidance on how to request a refund) within 48hrs of the booking time, we will process this for you.

Can I cancel my booking or change my booking date/time?

Yes, you can cancel your booking up to 48hrs before arrival. To do so, you must email info@theboardwalk.ie and we can reschedule your booking or refund you. All cancellations requested less than 48hrs in advance will not be entitled to a refund. To change your booking date/time, you simply need to email info@theboardwalk.ie and we will confirm your change of date/time.

NOTE: All refunds take a few business days to be returned into your bank account.

Can I bring my dog on the boardwalk?

No dogs are permitted to access the Boardwalk. Any dogs you see on the site are part of the Sheridan family and are sheepdogs for the working farm.
